Underwater fluorescence lidar for contaminant detection

Development of an underwater fluorescence lidar for detecting hydrocarbons and other organic contamination from remotely operated and surface platforms

Problem

Surface observations cannot identify an underwater release until material reaches the surface. Ports, marine outfalls, and subsea oil and gas infrastructure therefore require a method that can examine the water column close to the potential source.

Approach

SubseaLIF is developing ssLIF on the mFL-12 platform. The instrument operates within the water column and is intended for remotely operated underwater vehicles and surface drones. Development is directed first towards shallow and coastal use, with a target operating depth of 600 m.

Outcome

ssLIF remains in development. Its intended role is the real-time detection of hydrocarbon leaks, wastewater markers, and oil-in-water emulsions below the surface. No final performance specification or release date has been published.

Our contribution

LIFeLiDAR leads the optical engineering and fluorescence measurement work. Adequate Tools contributes the underwater platform, mechatronics, and autonomous-systems expertise required for integration and validation.
