From 21 to 23 June 2016, a LIF lidar surveyed the lake part of the Gorky Reservoir on the Volga, the 100 km reach above the Gorodets dam, recording chlorophyll-a, CDOM, and total suspended matter along the track.

Chlorophyll-a had a median of 3.3 µg/L and exceeded 7.6 µg/L in the highest 5% of readings, with CDOM near 11.8 a.u. and suspended matter near 1.7 mg/L. The reservoir develops blue-green algal blooms from June through October. The same reservoir was measured again from a motorboat on 21 and 22 September 2018, the campaign behind the regional Sentinel-2 retrieval models published in Remote Sensing in 2019.
