Villefranche-sur-Mer, Var and Magnan plumes

Surface fluorescence and above-water radiometry across the Var River and Magnan Stream plumes after heavy rainfall on the Nice coast

On 7 May 2026, we joined the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche aboard R/V Sagitta 3 for a coastal survey from Villefranche-sur-Mer to the Var River and Magnan Stream mouths. Rainfall on 4–6 May had increased river discharge and the suspended-particle load entering the Baie des Anges.

Eight stations covered clear offshore water, plume boundaries and river-influenced water. LIFL.11 recorded surface fluorescence underway at 10 Hz, with mFL.12 fluorescence spectra and mHR.2 above-water radiometry alongside water sampling and Secchi-disk observations.

The preliminary surface record shows marked changes in chlorophyll and CDOM fluorescence across the plumes. These are Raman-normalised relative signals; calibration against the collected water samples is required before reporting absolute chlorophyll concentrations. The two chlorophyll maps cover separate periods because the Var plume shifted during the survey.
